The catalogue includes an introduction by Cosmo William Monkhouse which emphasises the role played by Girtin and his contemporary Joseph Mallord William Turner (1775–1851) in developing the watercolour medium.
The exhibition contained four works attributed to Turner which are catalogued here as either Monro School copies of Girtin/Turner collaborations or of uncertain status: 'Near Dover' (see TG0263 figure 1); 'Cliffs at Dover' (see TG0834 figure 1); 'Study of Boats' (see TG1473 figure 1); 'River Scene in Italy' (see TG0572 figure 1).
