About this Work

This view of Wapping was bought from the Palser Gallery with the title ‘On the Thames’ and as by Girtin. However, it was not included by Thomas Girtin (1874–1960) and David Loshak in their catalogue, and Tom Girtin (1913–94) pronounced it a ‘dud’, suggesting instead that it was the work of John Henderson (1764–1843). More recently, the work has been attributed to Edward Dayes (1763–1804), but comparison with another London scene by Henderson, Old London Bridge, with the Shot Tower in Construction, and St Olave’s Church (TG1920), suggests that Warehouse and Shipping at Wapping was by Girtin’s later patron. Henderson made a number of copies of Girtin’s work and there is a possibility that this watercolour, like Old London Bridge, was made after a lost work by his protégé.
