About this Work

This pencil study shows part of the Hôtel des Monnaie, which housed the Mint, on the left bank of the river Seine, together with part of the Pont Neuf. The building appears to the right of Girtin’s drawing for plate eight of Picturesque Views in Paris (TG1874), and it seems that the artist moved forward from his original position on the Quai des Tuileries in order to make a more detailed view of the structure that is actually larger than the sketch that was traced to create his soft-ground etching (see print after TG1874). The smaller drawing was almost certainly created using a camera obscura, and Girtin may have made other close-up views to supplement those more expansive scenes (such as TG1870). Like this example, they were presumably created freehand, with a noticeably softer line and a more fluid technique.
