About this Work

Lake Walenstadt

This view of Lake Walen (also known as Walensee and Lake Walenstadt) was recorded in 1935 as being a Monro School copy of a composition by John Robert Cozens (1752–97) (see figure 1) that he probably executed for Richard Payne Knight (1751–1824) in 1776 (Bell and Girtin, 1935, no.45). The watercolour has not been seen in public since then, and there is no known image of it, but the work is included here because it was copied from a known Cozens composition and therefore has every chance of being the product of Girtin and Joseph Mallord William Turner (1775–1851) working in collaboration at the home of their mutual patron Dr Thomas Monro (1759–1833). Like another Monro School view of Lake Walen (TG0493), the missing watercolour shows the Leistchamm, though seen looking north from the other side of the narrow water.
