About this Work

This work has not been seen since it was sold at auction in 1905. Thomas Girtin (1874–1960) and David Loshak recorded that the work was signed and dated 1802 (Girtin and Loshak, 1954, p.207). If it is authentic, it would be of some significance, as only five other dated watercolours from the last year of the artist’s life survive.
