James Leslie Wright (1862–1954) worked in the manufacturing industry in the Midlands. He began his collection of watercolours and drawings in 1928, gifting over four hundred of the finest to Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery in 1953, shortly before his death. The gift included fourteen watercolours by or attributed to Girtin, prominent amongst which were The South Front of Chalfont Lodge, Seen from across the Lawn (TG1563) and The Cain Falls (Pistyll Cain), near Dolgellau (TG1320). His daughter, Hope Keith, née Wright (1902–83), known as Mrs Cecil Keith, inherited two works by Girtin from him.
