James Vine (1772–1837) was a merchant who traded in Russia and who lived at Niton on the Isle of Wight, where he built up an important collection of watercolours. He is the first known owner of four significant works by Girtin, including views of Lichfield and Peterborough cathedrals (TG1003 and TG1020) as well as the celebrated Durham Cathedral and Castle, from the River Wear (TG1074), though it is not known whether they were commissioned from the artist directly.
