Thomas Tomkison (c.1764–1853) was a musical instrument maker and collector who traded from 55 Dean Street, Soho. He is best known as a collector of the watercolours of Girtin’s contemporary Joseph Mallord William Turner (1775–1851), owning an important group of the subjects Turner made for Picturesque Views in England and Wales and generously lending them to various exhibitions. The one work by Girtin he is known to have owned, An Exterior View of the Ruins of Lindisfarne Priory Church (TG1111), was bought directly from the artist and it was inscribed with an instruction to his representative, Samuel William Reynolds (1773–1835), to send it on to the collector.
